Eco Eyewear has released its 2023 Carbon Footprint Report, which assessed greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production of the three main materials used in the brand’s frames.

The materials covered in the report include Eco Eyewear’s biobased materials (made from castor seed oil), recycled metal, and ocean plastic. The brand also produces frames from bioacetate.

The study was conducted in accordance with international standards on Life Cycle Assessment (ISO14040/14044), the brand shared, and encompassed the lifecycle of the eyewear including the production of raw materials, transportation, packaging, distribution, and end-of-life management.

The results found that each frame contributes an average of 1482 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions.

Broken down by material, this was measured as 1703 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions for biobased frames, 1447 kilograms for recycled metals, and 1296 for frames made from ocean plastics.

The brand shared: “Carbon footprint is a crucial environmental indicator that measures the direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions produced by a company or a product, facilitating an understanding of its impact on climate change.”

“As global concerns about climate change continue to rise, Eco Eyewear recognises the urgent need to mitigate greenhouse gas concentrations and implement adaptive measures,” the company said in a statement.

The report outlines the carbon footprint of each material used in frames by Eco Eyewear and breaks this down into the different phases of a frame’s lifecycle.

The report also defines the components of the frame materials, shares a life cycle inventory, and impact assessment.

By releasing its carbon footprint report for 2023, the company said it “remains committed to playing an active role in combating climate change and setting the standard for environmental responsibility within the eyewear industry.”

Eco Eyewear participates in a tree planting initiative that has seen it plant 3.3 million trees in total, offsetting 154 million kilograms of carbon dioxide.
