Ophthalmology busiest specialty for third year running
New statistics from NHS Digital reveal that ophthalmology had the highest number of outpatient appointments, with 7.9 million patients attending
Ophthalmology recorded 7.9 million attendances over the year, up from 7.8 million attendances in 2018-2019.
The latest statistics reveal the next busiest specialties were trauma and orthopaedics, with 7.4 million attendances, and physiotherapy, with 5.2 million patients presenting for treatment.
Ophthalmology has been the busiest outpatient specialty for the past three years, overtaking trauma and orthopaedics, which had the highest attendance tally in 2016-2017.
Across all specialties, there were 124.9 million outpatient appointments over 2019-2020.
The data reveals that the five most common treatment specialties account for 30.2% of all appointments attended by patients.
Over the year, there were 627,000 ophthalmology appointments that patients did not attend.
